This endangers aquatic life in addition to being an aesthetic nuisance. Fish may confuse the keys for food, which could cause fatalities or stomach problems. Not to mention the extra weight that the bridge itself is carrying. It's a lot for a building meant to support people, not locks.
However, the idea of love locks has certain inherent problems that go beyond environmental ones. Why is it that we feel the urge to make a lasting impression everywhere we go? Is it not possible for us to merely savor an instant without being compelled to preserve it in metal?

While these actions might not be as conspicuous as a love lock, they ultimately have considerably greater significance.
Regarding those bothersome padlocks that are currently adorning bridges worldwide, maybe a change is needed. To prevent more damage to the remaining portion of the bridge, some communities have begun to remove love locks or designate special spots for them.
